 Le Jazz Cette Semaine ...

Chers Amis,

We are back in Paris after a two week mini-tour in California and New Mexico. We had a great time visiting with friends, catching up and enjoying some very good meals. Leslie and I dropped in on Ron Kobayashi’s Friday night jam session in Newport Beach where we had a chance to see and hear many great musicians.  There were several nice hangs especially at Kim and Gary Roberts’ home and at Mike and Carol Penn’s home. And, oh yeah, while we were there we did six concerts, three radio interviews and two interviews for newspapers as well as release our latest recording “Leslie Lewis & Gerard Hagen in New York” (Surf Cove Jazz 104). We really enjoyed working again with our California band of Jerry Kalaf, Domenic Genova, Joey Sellers, Chuck Manning and Ron Meza. On Aug. 4th Leslie had a really great concert with the Pacific Symphony and J.T. and the California Dreamin’ Band at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, CA. She was burnin' and I couldn’t have been more proud of her.

In Beverly Hills we worked a new room for us called H.O.M.E. where we were reacquainted with several friends (Alan, Tina & Priscilla) from L.A. that we met while we were playing at Chez Papa in Paris. It was great fun to see them back in the U.S. Our gig at Kobe Steakhouse was sold out and a real nice way to end our tour.  In New Mexico we got to work with our friends Cal Haines and Victoria Rogers and a new friend Jon Gagan. While there we had two of three concerts sell out and played in some very nice venues including the Harwood Museum,Taos and The Outpost, Albuquerque. Along the way we made many new friends and had quite a few laughs.

It is great to be back in Paris but, as always, a little melancholy lingers from having to say good bye to so many friends and family.  We are completely wiped out from the trip but we are also excited about some new musical adventures on the horizon and a some new music we want to tackle in the near future. Before that can happen we have decided to take advantage of the last few weeks of summer (with no work booked) and take the first real vacation we have had in several years. We are going to spend a week on the Black Sea with the plan of doing next to nothing!  I have a hard time doing nothing but I’m hoping maybe Leslie can somehow settle me down. She always seems to find some way to surprise me. If you have the idea that I’d be lost without her you’d be right!
